April Wrap-up and Setting May Goals

And just like that, another month is coming to a close. I’m linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down to wrap up April and set some May goals. But first, here’s a quick look at this week in fitness.

April Wrap-up and Setting May Goals

Monday  — 1.5-mile walk, Upper Body Strength & Core
Tuesday — 2.25-mile walk, otherwise rest
Wednesday — Lower Body Strength & Hip mobility work
Thursday — 3-mile run
Friday — 1-mile walk & Yoga (hip focused)
Saturday — 6.2-mile run

Sunday — As I sit here with my coffee watching a steady rainfall, I have no interest in a cold rainy run so I’ll be taking my recovery “run” to the bike.

I logged 64 (mostly pain-free) miles this month and did pretty well with these April goals:

  • Opt outside every day – I missed just two days.
  • Daily stretching or mobility work – Check.
  • Increase long runs to 8 miles – Nope – just didn’t happen.
  • Complete the Team Wilpers Spring Run Challenge workouts. – In progress. I just finished week 5 of this 8-week challenge.

So, what’s on deck for May? I’m extending all of April’s goals and adding

  • Mystic 10K — I’m looking forward to running my first race of 2023!
  • Return to early morning runs — I runfessed that thanks to my sometimes hectic schedule, I’ve taken the fit it in where I can when I can. I prefer to get out and get my runs done early. This is especially a must once the weather turns hot so I might as well get back in the habit now, right?
  • Stick to a set workout schedule — See above.
  • Prioritize recovery and sleep

How was your April? What are you looking forward to in May?

  1. Cold rain is no fun. Warm rain is a different story!

Great job this month achieving your goals and excited to see what May brings!

  2. Darlene Cardillo says

Rain-free runs for the win. So a good month for you!.

Can’t wait to hear about your 10k. I do love Mystic but haven’t been in years.

I have a hard time running before work… I want to esp when it gets warm out.

I’m missing so many races now because I want to stay healthy for Brooklyn Half in May… I hope it’s worth it.

  3. Ugh, you have the rain and I have the wind. Too bad Momma N can’t gift us a happy medium, LOL. Nice monthly mileage, Michelle…total bonus that they were mostly pain-free!

  4. Ugh to this weather. Seriously, it was sunny when we started our run this morning and we finished in the rain. If it was a steady rain, I would have passed on it too.

    • The temps have dropped again here. I just can’t bring myself to be out there in a cold rain and it looks like we’re in for a lot of it this upcoming week.

  5. You did well with your April goals- I’m impressed by the daily stretching and mobility. And yes- I’m pretty sure in the summer you’ll be wanting to run first thing! You probably have at least a month before it becomes a necessity though. I like “prioritize recovery and sleep”- I need to get in on that one.

    • Given how much I dislike running in the heat, getting out early will definitely be a must. Now if I can just get my work schedule to cooperate!

  6. May is a great time for morning runs! Good luck on getting those goals. I guess my goal for May is to do my PT exercises consistently so I can get healthy again!!

  7. Great job getting after your goals! I too do best when my runs happen earlier than later. Life just gets in the way too often when I put them off. I’ll be treading water in May with work, end-of-school events, Mother’s Day and what have you!

  8. Great job on your goals this month. I am hoping to keep up my opting outside as well. It is definitely no fun at all to walk in the rain though

  9. great monthly mileage and top effort on your goals! I’m certain you’ll hit the mark in May! And I totally get you with the fitting it in thing, though I just want to cry when I think about getting up early to run (too dramatic? haha). At some point I will need to so perhaps I should seriously consider following suit.

I am thinking about goals for May, not quite sure yet.

  10. Awesome monthly mileage! Totally relate to what you said about a workout routine. Going to OTF during the week makes it easier for me to wake up those days to get in my morning workouts, but other mornings I definitely struggle.

The endless rain this weekend definitely put a damper on motivation for outdoor activities, but of course it’s beautiful and sunny today when I have to be indoors working, lol.

    • Thanks Kim – I feel like the miles are slowly coming back.

I got stuck inside today too and now the forecast for the rest of the week is very rainy and cold…sigh.

  11. I’m sorry the weather is stopping you from going out running. I hope it’ll get better soon. Well done getting in the mobility work every day. I probably should do the same.
I like your goals for May. Good luck with the 10k! I hope May will treat you well.

  12. Glad your April miles were mostly pain free! I am trying to get back to that place myself. 😉

The local meteorologist said our May could be colder than April, which was mild but nice! Today started cool and grey.

  13. Well done for a good and mostly pain-free April. My April saw me finally starting running again – but also have horrible physio exercises – and May will see a continuation of that, I hope, well running and doing even more, worse exercises until appt on 11 May then we’ll see.

  14. You’re doing great. Right now, we are on the cusp of those super hot mornings, and so we know if we don’t get up and out, it’s going to be even worse.

We’ve also had the worst storms, making it extra awful. Why is weather so difficult?
