After last Sunday’s struggle to complete 4.25 miles, the quad and TFL pain continued into Monday. So, instead of fighting with it, I decided to just give in and take the week off from running. I only have one fall race on the horizon (November) so there seemed to be no point in aggravating the situation. Plus I’m not mad about missing some truly awful weather conditions. Here’s how my non-running week played out.
Week 31 – My Non-Running Week
Monday — Upper body strength, core & stretch. I decided to give one of the Peloton Split Strength Programs a try this week and chose Robin’s Advanced Program with 3 30-minute sessions. Day 1 focused on chest and triceps.
Tuesday — 2.7-mile walk, core & Stretch.
Wednesday — Split training Day 2 – legs & core & stretch. I had delusions of stacking another class after this but my legs were toast!
Thursday — Peloton ride, 2.75-mile walk, & Stretch. In lieu of my traditional birthday run, I jumped on a rare (for me) live ride in hopes of getting a shoutout, but no luck. Still enjoyed the ride and shared lots of high-fives, and then my hubby joined me for a power walk. I also treated myself to a much-needed sports massage after work.
Friday — 1.5-mile walk otherwise rest day.
Saturday — Day 3 of Robin’s program – back and biceps, Core & Stretch. My arms were jelly when I was done.
Sunday — Finally a run! While 82 degrees and oppressive humidity were not ideal, I was really looking forward to running this morning. 3.2 miles done with no pain!
I’ll be looking forward to getting back to more running this week. We’re in the thick of a heatwave so the runs are likely to be on the shorter side, but as long as they continue to be pain-free I’ll take it.
How is summer running treating you?
I’m linking up with Kim and Deborah for the Weekly Run Down. Join us!
Those advanced classes were no joke! Yay to us for giving them a go. Glad to read that you are feeling better after some time off. Happy running this week
I so agree – those classes were challenging! I’m glad we both tried them. I’ll definitely re-visit the program again.
Great job getting out there today (it’s SO gross). I hope you can keep up the pain free runs! Sometimes some time off really helps.
82???? Wow!
It really does help – I’m learning more and more that it is often better not to push through.
Good idea to take a few days off from running, and great job on your run today!
The split strength programs sound interesting. I haven’t done one yet since I go to OTF 3x a week, but I would love to try it!
I really liked Robin’s Split Program and plan to try Callie’s next. If you ever take a break from OTF, I think you’d enjoy this.
Happy Birthday and welcome to 56 (we’re the same age!). I also had a non-running week and I’m not too happy about it! Glad your TFL/quad situation is feeling better. Doing a challenging strength program like that was a good idea- whenever I’m not running I need something else to focus on.
Thanks Jenny 🙂 I’m hoping we both don’t have to take another week off from running any time soon!
I bet it felt good to take the week off! That’s how I felt the week I went to see Holly! But I really need to buckle down and start building for my half in October. it’s 8 weeks away!
Oh fun – which half are you running?
Glad your week off paid off with a pain-free run!
Happy birthday! While a birthday shout-out would be nice, a birthday massage sounds even better.
The massage was definitely a win 🙂
Nothing wrong with a week sabbatical from running. It sounds like it worked some magic on the quad/TFL issues, so it was totally worthwhile. I need to check out those “split” classes…I’m deep into Matty’s core and Tunde’s arms, so those have been my focus in recent weeks. I’m glad you had a great birthday 😉
I still want to check out Tunde’s program. I pelo-fess that I started Matty’s core program but lost momentum – I needed more variety.
Sounds like a little down time from running is just what you needed. Glad the quad and TFL are feeling better! I adjusted my schedule so I didn’t have to run over the weekend because the heat/humidity have been unbearable. I’m grateful I am not training for anything big!
Not having a training plan hanging over my head is a gift right now!
I’m so happy your run was pain free – it sounds like a week of rest was just what your body needed! Shorter runs this week sound like a great way to ease back into running. Fingers crossed that everything continues to feel good.
Debbie @ Deb Runs recently posted…Weekly RunDown: July 31 – August 6 / Lots of Cycling, a Special Run, and a Loud Boom
Thanks so much Deb 🙂
Yay for no pain!
The heat and humidity make everything feel heavy and gross so it hasn’t been the best running summer, so what can you do?
The humidity has been just suffocating – I’m so over it!
We’ve got a heatwave so after a good 20 miler week last week I’m on cutback again. Going to try getting out super-early tomorrow. Glad you’re feeling a bit better, poor thing! Not fun to not run not out of choice …
Oh no I hope it cools off for you soon!
Tomorrow evening, apparently!
Glad taking time off helped you. Hooray for a pain-free run.
These temps have been killing me…
Relief is on the way!!
This week’s weather was such a relief – hopefully you got a break too!
