Some September Runfessions

OK, I feel like I’ve said this a lot this year, but seriously, where did the month go?!

Somehow here we are once again on the last Friday of the month which means Marcia has opened the runfessional. It’s also time for another Fit Five Friday hosted by Darlene, ReneeJenn, Zenaida, and yours truly, so let’s get started.

Some September Runfessions

Canceled Race — This week I received an email from race organizers announcing that Boston’s Run to Remember scheduled for November has been canceled. All registrations are being moved to Memorial Day Weekend (the traditional race date). While I was initially surprised and disappointed (I’ve always wanted to run this course in cooler fall temps), I runfess that I was also relieved. I had been agonizing over how far behind I was in my training plan thanks to my cranky hip, and wondering how I was going to pull this off without pushing too hard to make up miles, and risking further injury. Crisis averted!

Pain tolerance — Following Monday’s cortisone shot in my hip I got my first chance to take a run on Wednesday. I runfess that I don’t think I realized just how much discomfort I’ve learned to tolerate – running felt smoother and lighter…how nice to be able to say that!

Shoe Challenges — Back in July I runfessed that I had been holding off on trying out the new pair of Brooks Glycerins I won in a giveaway for fear that switching shoes would only add to my hip woes. Well, I finally took them out on the road a handful of times and I runfess I don’t love them. I’ve run in Glycerins before – in fact, the 17s were my marathon shoe and I loved them. The current model (19s) has more cushion than I would like – they feel, for lack of a better word, mushy. Whomp, whomp.

What are you run-fessing?

  1. Glad the hip is feeling much happier!!!! I have similar thoughts on the Glycerins…I like them, and they are comfy and functional, but they are a bit too cushiony. My solution is to wear them for my shorter runs, and all has been well with that. I can totally relate to your relief to have a race cancelled…sounds oh-so-familiar to what went through my head when my marathon pulled the plug. Yes, crises averted…for the win 😉

  2. It seems like a lot of canceled and postponed races have made a lot of runners happy! I’m glad the steroid helped your hip–I hope that it takes care of the inflammation in there.

I also run in Brooks but have never tried the Glycerines! I usually stick to the Adrenalines–they give my feet the support they need.

    • It’s funny you say that cause I’ve also noticed a number of runners on my social feeds breathing a sigh of relief over various cancelations. I do feel for the race directors though.

  3. So happy to hear the shot is helping.

Yes runners endure pain. I ran for over a year with foot pain. It’s kinda gone.

Right now I’m sticking to Topos. Until they change them.

Lots of races are being cancelled. I just had a 10k go virtual. Hopefully next year things will be more normal.

  4. I think a bunch of races cancelled because there are so many spring marathons and halfs this fall that they’re not getting the registrations to make it worthwhile for the risk. Just a theory!

    Glad your hip’s feeling better!

    Did your Arc’teryx gear arrive??

    • I think your theory may be right – my race was canceled because the registrations were way down. So sad since they usually sell out.

I did receive my Arc’teryx gear and love it! Thanks again for the great giveaway 🙂

  5. Very happy that the shot is giving you some relief!
As to the race, sometimes you get what you need, eh?

I tried the Glycerins once, years ago, but they felt way to heavy for me (they became walking shoes instead). I hear people rave about them now, though. That’s too bad you didn’t like them.

  6. So glad to hear that your hip is feeling better! Sometimes, the race thing works out to your advantage! Funny, I love the Glycerins and how much cushioning they have. I also love the levitates for their cushioning. Have you tried the Ghosts?

    • I really do feel like the Universe did me a big favor with the race.

I was so bummed that this round of Glycerins didn’t work out – I really did love the 17s. I’m still a Brooks fan and like both the Adrenalines and Ghosts. Are the Levitates as cushiony as the Glycerins?

  7. Ugh. I hate when you get a different shoe and it’s not everything you hoped. That’s the worst kind of betrayal.

I’m glad the cortisone helped so much!

  8. So happy that you’re feeling relief in your hip after the shot. It’s true that we get used to a certain level of pain when we have an injury.

Bummer about the canceled race 🙁 While I totally understand the reason, I remember how much fun that race was when I did it a few years go.

    • I was so surprised that they had to cancel but apparently, they did not get enough registrations at this point to cover their costs. It would have been fun to try that course in the fall.

  9. There seems to be a fresh wave of race cancellations. I’m glad you’re feeling good about your race moving to spring. I feel like an ugly step sister when it comes to all Brooks shoes. I’ve tried, Ghosts, Glycerine, Adrenaline, trail shoes of some sort and none ever work for me. Brooks seems like such a solid, fun brand I kind of have FOMO. Haha!

  10. A run with no pain- that must have felt good! Very glad to hear it.
I ran in the Glycerins for a while, but Brooks just don’t seem to fit the shape of my feet. I just read Marcia’s comment and I feel the same way! I want to like Brooks, but they just don’t work for me.

  11. Glad the cortisone shot is helping I runfess I was relieved to learn a shot is NOT an option for my Achilles woes because of the risk of rupture, because a shot in the ankle sounded horrible.

Good news, bad news on the race being moved. Let’s hope for more normal running in 2022!

I’ve never worn Glycerins, but I do hate it when they “update” a favorite shoe.

    • Yeah, I have to admit, while I was not loving the idea of a needle in my hip, I think the thought of a needle in my ankle does seem worse.

I really do hope we can get to more normal running next year – who would have guessed we’d still be dealing with so many cancelations at this point.

  12. What a bummer that the Glycerins did not work out for you. I have worn them but not recently. I know Des Linden runs in those shoes! Are you planning to run the Run to Remember race next year?
