Reasons to Run in the Morning

One of my April goals is to return to early morning runs. So as I make the shift back to my early morning workouts, I thought I’d share some of the benefits of getting an early start.

Five Reasons to Run in the Morning

Fewer schedule conflicts — We all know that as the day wears on there’s a high probability that life will get in the way of the best-laid plans. Getting out early for a run reduces the possibility of schedule conflicts and any stress related to worrying about how to fit a run in later in the day.

More time in your day — Being able to check the box on completing your run early in the day, essentially frees up time to take on more – adding more time to your day.

Alert and focused — Running gives you a great boost of both endorphins and adrenaline, which can help you to feel more focused and alert – not to mention the positive mood boost. That sounds like a good way to start the day to me!

A range of health benefits — Did you know that studies have shown a range of health benefits from early morning runs, including lower blood pressure, a more resilient immune system, and better sleep?

A moment of quiet beauty  — Quiet roads, fewer people to dodge, no mask needed…and the possibility of a sunrise. Getting out for an early morning run offers a moment of quiet to breathe and prepare for the day.

  1. I love running in the morning for all these reasons and more! I really feel like it sets up my day for success. I’m naturally a morning person and have more energy in the mornings anyway.

  2. I’m 100% a morning runner. It’s harder in the winter when there is less daylight and less time to get the run done before work. But from April to September is prime morning running time and I’m looking forward to it!

I had a few days recently where I wasn’t able to run in the morning and went at night. It felt really strange and my body felt very stiff from being at work all day. In the mornings I feel so relaxed.

  3. I prefer running in the morning. It’s just cold dark and I’m lazy lol.
Once it warms up I definitely will.

I agree with all your reasons.

And my job goes better too.

  4. I’m always a morning runner but when it’s lighter and it heats up, I’m an early morning runner. Yes to all the reasons you described!

  5. I am very lucky that I can (sort of) run when I want to. So when I run changes a little with the seasons.

Sometimes in Summer I’m an early morning runner, to beat the heat.

Usually I’m a morning runner, but in Winter that’s more late morning. I do self myofascial release and Yoga most mornings first thing — which leads me to one other benefit of exercising in the morning:

You get it done! So easy to let it go later in the day.

  6. I am a mid morning runner. Since I don’t have a job job, my schedule is a lot more flexible. One of my goals this summer is to be an earlier runner to avoid the heat as best I can. I agree with all of your points above but maybe just 2 hours later 🙂

  7. I love my early morning runs! Well, I love the early mornings, whether I’m running or cross-training. As I say…it’s my coffee 🙂

  8. It’s funny because I almost always run in the morning, but lately have done a couple late afternoon runs, and I like that too! Early morning runs still win out though, for all the reasons you mentioned, plus the weather… here in Florida the only comfortable time is usually early morning.

  9. I am not a morning person, but I do try to get out early in the day. It’s so nice to have it checked off my to do list before things go sideways.

  10. Not quite an early morning runner, but I have been “training” myself to at least walk in the early morning hours. And, while not super early, I always wonder who I am when I go to the park on Saturday morning to run 5KM haha! Love that I have the day ahead of me though and yes, definitely gives me more energy and focus!

  11. Morning runner for me as well for the reasons you stated. Great minds think alike!

  12. Morning runs are hard, but so much easier than trying to squeeze things in later in the day or working around other commitments. I also love the quiet mornings.

  13. I was never a morning runner until WFH. Alert and focused is the big one for me as having run, or even gone for a walk makes a big difference. I’ve been off the morning game but hope to be back to it this week
