It’s the first weekend of a new month which means it’s time for the Ultimate Coffee Date with Deborah and Coco. Given all that going on in the world right now I doubt if anyone would fault me if I dropped a little something (Kahlua, Bailey’s anyone?) into my coffee.
Let’s chat a little…
June Ultimate Coffee Date
Over coffee, I would first ask you how you are doing. To say that watching where we are in this country right now is weighing heavily on me would be an understatement. Yesterday in honor of George Floyd, I sat for silence in 8 mins and 46 secs and held him in my thoughts. I cannot begin to put into words what this experience was like. I invite everyone to do it – I will tell you 8 plus minutes never felt so long.
On a much, much lighter note, over coffee, I would tell you that we celebrated my middle schooler’s graduation yesterday. There was a parade, a Zoom ceremony, a celebratory taco bar dinner, chocolate cupcakes, and lots of laughs. Not the celebration we had hoped for but I think my son had a good day. And, now I’m trying to wrap my head around having two high schoolers in the house!
Over coffee, I would tell you that with school over for both boys, summer has officially arrived in the RWA household. While this is definitely not going to be a typical summer, we’re still creating our annual bucket list and plan to make the most of it. Personally, I’m looking forward to dinners on the deck, evening fires on the patio, and venturing out a little as stay-at-home restrictions start to ease here.
And, speaking of the stay-at-home restrictions, over coffee, I would tell you that phase 2 here begins on Monday and the thing I am most excited about is getting my hair cut! My appointment is booked for next Friday.
What would you tell me over coffee?
Two high schoolers in the house! I hope they are both continuing the plank challenge with you.
You’ll have to share what’s on your summer bucket list one day.
I’m happy to say they’re both still planking 🙂
Congrats to your son!!! I love that you’re only allowed to show the balloons LOL (as I said the other day, be glad you don’t have daughters). That’s a great tribute to George Floyd…I’m going to do that as well.
Oh yes, teenagers always have rules for us don’t they?! 😉
We are still in phase one here but hair and nails just opened. I have appointments next weekend. I am still a little nervous about it but also ready for some normalcy to return. Congrats to your son. It’s a bummer for all the kids that missed their graduations this year. Hopefully all of this will make us appreciate the little things more. Thanks for linking up for coffee
I’m a little nervous about the haircut too, but so craving a little normalcy!
Phase 2 is happening for us today but we salons are still closed. 🙁
I am going to adopt your suggestion to sit for 8 minutes 46 seconds and think of George Floyd. Everyone should do this. Thank you for the advice.
Laurie recently posted…June Coffee Date – Make Mine Iced
Thank you Laurie.
We are in Phase 4–I’m finally getting a haircut and color in 2 weeks. Cocoa went to the groomer yesterday and boy is she happy! Who knew? The gym is open but I’m a little hesitant to go back…
Our gyms won’t open until phase 3 and I already know I won’t be rushing back. I’ll be embracing that at-home workout for a while longer I think.
It sounds like a great at home graduation! I’m glad you all were still able to celebrate it. And thank you for mentioning the idea about sitting still for those 8 minutes and 46 seconds for George Floyd. Those minutes must have felt crushing. I’m going to adopt that as well, along with the spending some of the weekend reading more anti-racist resources.
Thank you, Chaitali.
I think that is a really good way to honor George Floyd. I bet that time felt like forever. Congrats on your middle schoolers graduation! We just entered phase 2 today but I dont have plans to get my hair cut quite yet.
I admit that I’m a little nervous about going for the cut, but I’m really starting to feel a little desperate. I can’t remember the last time I went this long without a haircut.
Congratulations to your middle schooler! Best of luck in high school!
Hair salons were a Phase I opening for us here. We started Phase 2 today, but I just dyed my own hair. I can deal with it long and uncut for now. I just want to watch and wait and see a little longer. I seem to be the only one – so many people went straight for the salon.
8 minutes is forever. I can’t begin to imagine what George Floyd was thinking in those moments. This has to stop.
I still cannot believe he’s headed for high school!
Seriously when you sit for that long and think about what happened, 8 minutes seems like an eternity – it does have to stop.
Congrats on your son’s graduation! A taco bar dinner sounds awesome! 😛
We’re in phase 2-ish at the moment, with possible plans to go to 2.5 by the end of this month.
I’m with you–this can’t continue. I really, really hope things change for the better.
My son is taco-crazy so it was no surprise when this was his request for dinner 🙂
I share your hope that change is coming.
Congrats to your son! I guess there are no camps this summer? Sitting/mediating/praying for 8:46 is a powerful experience. I hope we hold on to this momentum and make some changes.
No camps…it’s gonna be a long summer!
I agree – hopefully, all that is happening is moving us towards some positive changes.
Can’t wait for a haircut. June 16.
Have started seeing friends. But it would nice to actually hug someone.
2020 so far has been a real downer.
Feel lucky to be healthy and employed.
I really miss hugging people too.
Congrats to your son! Sounds like you made the most of the situation we are in. My older daughter got herself a summer job but it’s going to be a challenge to keep my rising freshman constructively occupied until she can hangout with her friends.
I need a haircut something fierce and yet I haven’t scheduled one.
Thanks, Marcia – I really don’t know what he’s going to do this summer with no camps and friends at a distance. It’s going to be a challenge for sure!
Congrats to Zach on his graduation! I know it probably wasn’t what anyone had in mind, but it looks like the school did a great job at providing a different type of ceremony.
We are still in phase 1 here until June 20. I’m getting my hair cut in two weeks and I literally cannot wait – my hair is in desperate need of some TLC.
It was definitely a hard week. I have to believe that better things are up ahead – I sure hope so.
Thanks Kim – it’s hard to see the kids missing out on all the “normal” stuff but I think he had a good day!
