Hip Surgery Runfessions

It’s crazy to think that I’m already on Day 10 post-op! What a wild ride this has been. So for this week’s Fit Five Friday, I’m linking up with Marcia to share a few surgery-related Runfessions.

Hip Surgery Runfessions

Given how much better my hip feels, I runfess that I wish I hadn’t waited so long to have the surgery. I also runfess that I wish someone had warned me of how painful muscle spasms can be – whew! Thankfully I think the worse of it has passed.

While I was initially a little disappointed that my surgeon was not of the “go home the same day” club, I runfess that I am truly grateful for the extra nursing attention I received during my one-night stay in the hospital.

I runfess that the recovery process can be humbling. While I didn’t expect to be “back to normal” right off the bat, it has been humbling to have to rely on others for some of the basics (hello putting socks on or driving anywhere). I am quickly learning how to MacGyver most situations. (Please tell me that you get that reference, or am I dating myself LOL).

I runfess that I’m actually looking forward to starting out-of-home PT. I’ve been working with a therapist in-home, and while she’s very nice, the sessions are beyond tedious. Will regular PT be wildly exciting – probably not, but there will be more equipment and a change of scenary is always good, right?

Have you ever had surgery? What would you runfess?

  1. I’m glad to hear that you are recovering well and are not experiencing too much pain. Are you able to drive now?

  2. Keep doing that PT and you’ll be fine in no time. I have about six running friends locally who’ve had various forms of hip surgery and they’re all doing fine but they were all very good about the PT.

Great news that the surgery went well and that you are recovering.

I had serious ankle surgery. I found that PT was key – the live sessions and the daily exercises you do on your own.

It was hard to be dependent on others.

  4. That’s great news that you’re feeling good! I can relate to the humbling reality. Though my knee episode (2017) was nothing like your hip surgery, there were some frustrating moments…like keeping my leg as straight as possible while the suture was “sealed & healed.” Getting in & out of a car (with my long legs) was a production on, LOL! I hope things continue to go well for you <3

  5. Ha ha! Love MacGyver!

Recovery can be incredibly humbling. I think it’s even worse when you’re used to being so strong and competitive, but you HAVE to go easy so you don’t compromise your healing.

I’ve had a few surgeries, including gallbladder removal, a tonsillectomy, wisdom teeth removal and of course, the fixation of my tibia and fibula. None of them were fun.

  6. So glad your recovery is going well! My mom got a “grabber” from Amazon that was a lifesaver after her hip fracture, so she could pick things up off the floor, etc. I think she also had a special thing to help with socks (since she lives alone).

All PT can be tedious, but it is less tedious at a PT place. The one’s I’ve been to are in open rooms so there’s a lot going on to distract you from the tedium. 😉

I do remember how humbling it was when I had my ACL surgery and had to wait until my husband came home so I could shower the first few weeks. Sounds like you are on the road to recovery-it is never as fast as we would like! Hang in there
