Five Ways to Enjoy a Summer Staycation

I was lucky enough to have a bonus week off from work last week – the organization I work for closed the office for the July 4th week, giving us all a paid week off! I was feeling very fried leading into the July 4th holiday and so it was a perfect time for a little staycation!

For today’s Fit Five Friday, I’m sharing five ideas to enjoy your next summer staycation.

Five Ways to Enjoy a Summer Staycation

Play tourist in your hometown – Most cities are full of special attractions that locals often take for granted. Spend a day or two exploring some local attractions.

Create an outdoor oasis — Turn your deck or patio into an outdoor “room”, a space perfect for alfresco dining, reading, working out, or just soaking up some sunshine.

Spend time on a favorite hobby or start a new one — Take advantage of the free time to indulge in a favorite pastime or try your hand at something new.

Set up an at-home spa retreat — How can you argue with a spa day? Collect your favorite skincare treatments for both your face and body, try an at-home mani/pedi, and don’t forget to also focus on your internal wellness with time spent journaling, meditating, and practicing yoga.

Truly unplug — Just because you’re home doesn’t mean you have to stay hyper-connected. Give yourself a break from screentime on your phone – less social media, don’t check your email…you get the picture.

How do you spend time on a staycation?

  1. These are all wonderful ideas! And a staycation can actually be so much more relaxing than a vacation. I’m so glad you were able to enjoy it and that outdoor space you’ve created looks like it belongs in some island resort!

    • My staycation came at a good time – I really needed the break.

Oh and while I have an outdoor space I love, I have stock photography to thank for this particular outdoor oasis 😉

  2. I really love that you touched on meditating & journaling! I’ve journaled on & off my whole life, but right now it’s back on & it’s so helpful.

I’ve been leaning into meditation even more since I set up a “meditation chair”, aka lounge chair with a couple of pillows I can sit on outside by one of our fountains. It’s great!

All great tips, Michelle. That’s so great that your company gifted you that time off. Glad you got a holiday break!

  3. I love all these ideas, especially the unplugging one. That’s something I totally need to implement! Our town has a history walk, with a brochure you can get from the Chamber. It highlights a lot of the downtown historical buildings, and their significance, as well as a lot of trivia on our town’s founders.

  4. I am all for the at home spa idea! Playing tourist in your town is also fun. there are so many museums I need to get back to around here!

    • I know what you mean – it’s been a while since I’ve done any museum hopping. And, really can you ever go wrong with a home spa day?!

  5. Great ideas.

Believe it or not, I’ve never had a stay-cation.

I do not have a lot of vacation days so the ones I get are used to go away…

But if I did, it would be reading or knitting or gardening….

  6. Well, now I want a stay-cation! These are all great ideas. I especially love the idea of being a tourist in your hometown. I know there are so many things in my area that I’ve never done.
I’m glad you got that week off- it must have been awesome.

  7. I feel like the last few years have been a staycation. I love touristing in Chicago and definitely unplugging! (And trying local fancy spas or pools!)

  8. these are fabulous ideas! especially the at home spa day! I could use one of those! and honestly, we spent so much on our back garden and still don’t sit out there… I think I need to change that STAT.

I think if I had a free week I would definitely do some practical things but if the weather was good I would likely take advantage of it for a really long bike ride! I absolutely love riding when it’s nice out – and stopping along the way for iced coffee or ice cream (or pie, hello!). It truly puts a huge smile on my face!
