With last Sunday’s 10K done and my November half marathon canceled, this week was all about recovery with no running. Here’s how the week went:
Weekly Run Down – Week 40
Monday — Yoga
Tuesday — Upper Body Strength, Core & Stretch
Wednesday –– 2.5-mile walk, Core & Hip mobility work
Thursday — Low-impact Ride, Core & Stretch
Friday — 3-mile walk & Hip mobility work
Saturday — Full Body Strength, Core & Stretch
Sunday — Low-impact Ride & Core (planned)
A highlight of the week was volunteering at bib distribution for the Boston Marathon on Friday. I always love the energy of the city on Marathon Weekend! It was great to meet and talk with runners from all over – you could really feel and see how grateful people were to have made it to this point. I even had one runner ask me to join her in a photo of getting her bib! So fun!
The Weeks Ahead – Some Mini Goals
Running — I plan to get back out on the road tomorrow. With the Run to Remember Half now pushed off until May, there’s nothing to train for, which is really the best thing for my healing hip. The week off has done me a world of good and the plan for the rest of the fall is to enjoy the weather and just run to run.
Walking — I make no secret that the fall is my favorite season, so why not maximize my time outdoors before winter creeps in? On the days I’m not running, I plan to get out for 2-3 miles of walking.
Lower Body Strength & Core — The orthopedic doc wants to see me put a focus on strengthening the muscles around my hips, so I’ve pulled out my PT notes and will be re-taking some of my favorite Strength for Runners classes on the Peloton app.
Sugar Detox — A friend invited me to join her for the 14-day Sugar Vaca hosted by Rhianne at Believe in Your Health. I’m looking forward to using the last 2 weeks of October to give my body a re-set I think it needs.
So those are basically some mini-goals to carry me through the rest of this month.
Best of luck to everyone racing this weekend!
I’m linking up with Kim and Deborah for the Weekly Run Down link-up. Join us!
It must be so much fun to be in Boston this weekend! I am happy to see that you are also taking recovery seriously.Cutting sugars has been a huge help to me as well with my overall diet and nutrition.
This is definitely one of the best weekends to be in Boston!
I’m really looking forward to feeling the effects of the detox.
I wish we would have been at the expo Friday, would have seen you! Boston feel like a big runner party 🙂
A 14 sugar detox sounds interesting…no Halloween candy then 🙂
I know – sorry I missed you! I hope you had a great weekend in Boston!
Glad you got a nice week to recover and your hip is feeling better! Going back to the PT exercises can only help.
Yes, it must have been awesome to be at bib distribution! I have a friend who’s running this year, after trying to qualify for years. I’m going to watch the first part of the race before work tomorrow. So exciting.
Good luck with your mini goals! They sound great.
The PT exercises are tedious but oh so necessary. Thanks Jenny!
You are very smart about giving your body time to recover. And I love all your mini goals! Go get em!
Thanks so much Judy 🙂
I love the “run to run” strategy you mentioned 😉 When my marathon was cancelled, that was immediately where my mind shifted. Even though I have the half marathon next weekend, I was essentially “trained” for that distance already…so it feels like I’ve just been coasting, and THAT feels nice. I think all those mini goals are an awesome to stay in the game as you continue to recover!
It’s great that you’re already trained can just enjoy your runs! You’re going to do great next weekend 🙂
I’ve mentally taken my November Half off the table, but haven’t cancelled my 10M yet. Maybe I should so I stop pushing myself — although with a course change to out-and-back it’s flatter than it would have been ….
Will you finish your sugar detox before Halloween? 😉
I get how hard it is to cancel a race – in so many ways I’m grateful that my race was cancel vs. me having to make the decision.
The last day of the detox is Halloween – more motivation to just hand out the candy and not consume it 😉
Will you spectate tomorrow? I’m looking forward to seeing how Shalane does after running Chicago today. She definitely took it “easy” today, finishing 2:46. I hope she does well tomorrow!
I wasn’t quite ready to be back in the middle of the huge crowds so I’ll be watching from home. I can’t wait to see how Shalane does – such a huge challenge running all 6!
I’ll bet bib distribution was so much fun! The vibe in Boston over marathon weekend is electric! Love the mini goals you set for yourself. You are brave and wise to do a sugar detox when Halloween candy is rampant!
Hopefully, this detox will be the extra motivation I need to leave the bags of Halloween candy just for the kids 🙂
How fun (and nice of you) to volunteer at the Boston expo!
Your 14-Day Sugar Vacay sounds very interesting. I hope you enjoy it and that it goes well. I’ll be very interested in hearing how it goes.
I think you’re smart to take things easy – sounds like the rescheduled half is a blessing. I love that your plan is to just run to run so there’s no pressure to go beyond what your hip can handle. Happy healing!

Oh thanks Deb – it was my 7th year volunteering and I just love it!
I’m really curious to see how this detox plays out. I’ll definitely post an update as it goes along.
Seeing all those athletes collecting their bibs and feeling their excitement must have been so exciting! Running to run is kind of what I’ve been doing recently. I start a new plan soon but it’s been fun to just run (and to miss one without guilt!)
How fun that you’ll be training again soon! Can’t wait to hear which race you’ll be running.
Volunteering at Boston sounds awesome! Bib distribution is a fun job – it would be next level at a race like that. Good for you! I am watching the Boston marathon right now. It brings back all the memories of being there!

It really is such a special race! Volunteering is a fun way to be a part of it all.
Great news you can rest. I had to strengthen the muscles around my hip when I was going through my first bout with my leg length disparity but it was so long ago I don’t recall what I did!
Hopefully, the time off and the slow build-back will be just what I need.
So cool that you were able to volunteer at bib distribution for the Boston Marathon. I hope that all the runners had a great experience today. Luckily it seems like they had great weather too.
The sugar detox sounds interesting. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts after you finish the 2 weeks.
I really enjoyed bib distribution and will probably request it again when they return to their normal schedule in April.
FOMO on living near Boston.
I would love to volunteer for nYC but still live too far away.
That’s a great idea to have mini goals.
I know I need to get back into walking. I was great during the pandemic but have gotten lazy.
I’ve really slacked on my walking too. I figure with my run miles down I should be able to throw a few more walks in each week.
I love that you got to volunteer! That must have been such great energy!
Having mini goals is so great <3
This was my 7th time volunteering and it is always so much fun!
Boo on the November cancellation, but totally agree re: hip healing. I’m with you on the walks. Way too nice to be indoors

I definitely had mixed feelings about the cancelation because it is my favorite half, but in the end definitely better for me. I’ll still get to run the half when they return to their regular schedule in May.
