With a couple of fall races on the calendar (yay!), I’ve been thinking about my goals for the Summer months. So for this week’s Fit Five Friday, I’m laying out some summer fitness goals.
Five Summer Fitness Goals
Acclimate & Embrace the Heat — I’m going to do my best to properly prep for summer running, focusing on my hydration & electrolyte intake and getting out extra early if necessary. I make no secret that summer running is my least favorite, but I’m going to put my word of the year Mindset to work here and shift my mental attitude to do my best to embrace the season.
Monthly Strength Challenges — Each month I’m going to take on a different strength “challenge”. For June, I’m following Adrian’s Strength Stack on the Peloton app. There’s a different stack featured each month by a different instructor. I haven’t decided yet what I’ll do for July or August so stay tuned.
Daily Stretching/Yoga Streak — I’m already off to a good start with this one. I’ve been stretching for at least 10 minutes a day since June 1. The goal is to keep this streak going all summer long.
Sharing some summertime fitness goals for today's #FitFiveFriday link-up! What have you got planned? Share on XBuild a Healthy Base for Fall Training — It’s been a long time since I’ve laid out a training plan, but I’ve decided to go all-in for my fall half marathon and actually follow a training plan (I may even throw in some speedwork…gasp!). To get training off to a good start at the end of August, I want to have a solid base. So this will mean scaling back the number of days I spend on the Peloton bike and adding more time on the run.
Enjoy the outdoors — Beyond running, I’m looking forward to getting back into hiking. My family usually does a lot of hiking during the summer months, but not so much last year. I’m also looking forward to some time kayaking or white water rafting…may even make it to the tennis courts.
Tell me, what have you got planned for the summer? Registered for any fall races yet?

These sound like great goals! I am also trying to make the most of summer running. Hopefully we will be acclimated soon since it got so hot so fast this past week. I think all your strength work and stretching will really pay off for your fall races!
Thanks Lisa I’m terribly inconsistent with my stretching and really hoping to make this a long-term habit!
I was just noticing yesterday how quickly these warm summery weeks are flying. All the best with your goals. Love the idea of spending more time outside and on hikes.
I agree – I feel like the pace of the days going by has increased. Gotta enjoy the summer while we can!
I am also determined to embrace the heat and make it through my 4th favorite season of running. The daily stretching is key for me!
Ha 4th favorite running season – I feel the exact same way 🙂
Lots of great goals, Michelle!! You’re going to be primed and ready for your fall half, no problem 😉
Thanks Kim – I hope so!
Nope, still not registered for any races. Just thinking about maybe one. If it actually is run! So far no word.
Great goals, Michelle.
Funny, hiking was the one thing we continued to do last Summer because we like it & it was safe. Trying to amp that up this Summer, just a little.
Sadly for us many of the parks and trails we usually hit all closed down with last year’s lockdown. It felt weird not to get many hikes in so I’m really hoping to make up for it this year.
I’ll bet with your mindset shift this will be your best summer of running ever. If you hydrate, get out early and give yourself a chance to acclimate you might start to enjoy it.
I finally signed up for a July 4th race, and promptly hurt my hip. EYE ROLL. I obviously jinxed myself!
That’s such a bummer about your race. Hopefully, your hip will be feeling better soon and you can find a new race.
Great goals.
I’ve slacked off on walking so I want to continue to get outdoors.
Definitely want to continue racing and when there are no race run consistently.
Movement is always a good goal!
Such great goals! I’m trying to acclimate to summer weather and figure out how to kick off my fall marathon training. This also means running less (on some days) and more on others and changing my pandemic run streak habits. Also trying to do more cross training and to enjoy the outdoor season, too!
Thanks Erica! Do you think you will continue your streak once you start your marathon training?
Embracing the heat is easier said than done but I’m here to say it can be done!! For a long time, afternoons were the only time I could run and I struggled at the start. But like your word for this year, I had to change my mindset – tell myself I really didn’t have a choice in the matter, LOL, but put in place things that will support me. And hydration and electrolytes are my saving grace. You feel so much better running in the heat once that is taken care of. Best of luck my friend! And I love that you are registered for 2 races!
Thanks so much Shathiso 🙂
it’s so awesome to have races on the horizon!! love your goals – I know you can manage these even if you feel like they could be slightly challenging (I am with you on running in the heat!!).
My biggest goal for this summer would be in late July or August to get parkrun launched. There’s real hope now, so that’s what I’m focusing on in the immediate future.
I really hope you are able to launch the parkruns – you’ve waited a long time for this!
Embrace the heat is the name of the game for me right now, as the temps are insanely hot, but the running still has to happen. 🙂 Great goals!
Thank you Angie! The heat can be so challenging…but as you said, the running still has to happen 😉
I always say I’m going to embrace the heat and learn how to acclimate but it never happens, lol! I’m just going to do what I can, I guess!

I usually just whine my way through the summer heat (LOL) so I’m hoping that adopting a new attitude might help make it more bearable.
My plan is to get through my June running streak and just keep moving forward!
I’ve got races in July and in October, so far. That will increase soon 🙂
You’re on a good roll with your streak! Looking forward to hearing which new races you’ll add to your calendar.
Very good goals. Daily stretching is very important, this is a lesson that I learned late! No plans for fall races, I am waiting for news from the organizers.
I feel so much better when I consistently stretch – the real mystery is why I keep letting it slide.
Love that you’re doing Adrians strength stack this month. I’ll have to touch base with you at the end of the month to see how you liked it!
Adrian is no joke, as you know – but I like his classes. I’ll let you know how it goes 🙂
These are all great goals! I am already complaining about the heat because, well, it got hot too soon. Summer running isn’t my favorite either but what is there to do about it? I am hoping this Summer I will sign up for a Fall 10k.

Can’t wait to hear which race you choose!
