It is hard to believe we’re coming to the end of July already! Marcia has opened the runfessional and I’ve got a few things to share.
July Runfessions
I’m sure this comes as no great surprise but I runfess that I am heat weary! I was pretty pleased that I was able to marshal through and stick to my training plan during last week’s heatwave. I am also certain that I did not have it in me to do it again! Thankfully temps have dropped this week.
And speaking of running in the heat – remember that idea I had to run a race each month this summer – yeah well I’m officially over it! I runfess that after facing scorching conditions for both the BAA 10K and the Gansett 10K, the idea of taking on a half marathon in August is just so unappealing to me right now. Luckily, I was smart enough to have held off on registering.
I runfess that my first attempt at running 5x/week wasn’t nearly as bad as I had anticipated. I think the key for me was really as simple as just taking it one run at a time and not thinking about “all the miles”. Since all went well, Coach Marc is going to have me stick with this approach for the foreseeable future.
Post-run recovery is going to be uber important as the miles continue to increase and I runfess that I’m very hit or miss in this department. I more often than not tend to blow this off largely due to time constraints. So the question becomes, just how early do I need to get up to fit it all in?!
So what are you runfessing? Are you good about post-run recovery?
You are such a star to get all those miles in in the heat! That’s going to payoff on race day for sure. I sure as hell would not be racing in August either. In fact I don’t even know of any half marathons around here until closer to fall. Thanks for runfessing!

Well I am really impressed with how much you have been able to up your mileage this summer. Kind of makes me feel like a slacker!

I wish I could run 5x a week. My body just doesn’t love that kind of intensity. Ugh.
The heat absolutely drains the will to do anything. I don’t even want to leave the house some mornings. Ugh.

You have been such a rock star!! Focusing on one run at a time is SO smart. I freak out when I see large numbers of miles…just doing each run & not thinking about the next run would serve me well.
This week’s weather was gorgeous! Glad your extra running days went well. You’re right that post-run stretching and such will be key to making that work. Maybe design a short “routine” you can get in the habit of? You’re going to be in great shape for Chicago!

I’m so impressed with how well your training has gone this summer! Hoping that this is ‘the year’ for you to get that PR marathon under your belt!

Focusing on one run at a time definitely makes it more manageable! Great job sticking to your plan even through all that heat!
I’m careful about my recovery however I can runfess that i pushed myself through 8.5 miles a bit faster than I wanted to go today, which was not that sensible in my BIG recovery from my ultra. But I did it to help a friend by taking on the club half-marathon training, as he’s doing his own marathon training… Still VERY TIRED, though!

You are making a very good job, running all those miles in summer. If you also succeed in planning the right recovery time and the appropriate diet (focused on recovering the energies lost during the workouts) i am sure you will get many PR in fall.

Haha, I love that photo! I’m a hot weather person, so even when it’s hot I’m just glad it’s not winter! It seems like you’re managing the heat really well, though. I’m more of an indoor workout person so it’s not been hitting me as hard!
Great job getting in the miles! I am not the best about post-run recovery, but I am working on it!!

I think all that frequency is great–and will pay off in your race. Nice work!
