Runfessions for March

It’s the last Friday of the month and Marcia has opened the Runfessional!

It's Friday and I'm joining @teamarcia for the Runfession link-up! #running #runchat #runfessions Share on X

I’m going to start by saying that while I usually try to keep up with my workouts and running while on vacation, I runfess that on this spring break, I totally let that go on the cruise. I packed my workout gear…running shoes and all, but only made it to the fitness center for one short treadmill run. We did our fair share of walking and hiking on the excursions, but otherwise, I gave my body a total break.

Spring weather is taking it’s sweet time making an appearance around here, despite what the calendar and one infamous rodent had to say (I’m looking at you, Phil)! I runfess that I have essentially been running around the weather, pushing early morning runs to the afternoon as often as I can in search of temps that don’t require “all the layers.”

I have lost my patience for distracted drivers – especially when I’m out running! It is amazing the number of drivers who seem to be too preoccupied to see the stop sign or are more concerned with going right on red than paying attention to the person in the crosswalk! I runfess that I have not been shy about sharing what I think of their driving skills…we’ll just leave it at that!

Recently, I received my volunteer assignment for the Boston Marathon. While it’s been fun to work the water stop at the finish line for the past couple of years, I runfess that this year I requested a pre-race assignment so that I can actually spectate once my volunteer shift is done.  Thankfully they complied and I’ll be organizing the runners and buses heading from Boston to Hopkinton.

What are you runfessing? Do you keep up with your workouts while on vacation?

  1. Totally understand what you mean about distracted drivers. It really is an epidemic now and it only seems to be getting worse.

That’s so exciting about your volunteer shift for the marathon! It will be nice to spectate after your shift is over.

That photo of the groundhog made me LOL

    • I’m really looking forward to being able to spectate again at Boston – it’s been a couple of years since I’ve actually gotten to see the race!

  2. Volunteering at Boston is going to be so much fun! I think that we all need a break sometimes from our usual schedule and taking a few days off is nothing to feel bad about. Sounds like it was just what you needed

  3. A break is definitely good for us at times, and it sounds like your vacation was still pretty active :). That was a smart idea to take an earlier volunteer shift at the race so you can spectate too!

  4. Volunteering at the Boston Marathon is so cool! I may have to give that a try. I am more and more of the mindset that running on vacation is not worth the effort. You need a break every once in a while. I have sometimes found some cool new places to run when visiting new cities (Portland, OR comes to mind), but often I run up running in less than appealing places.

  5. The Boston volunteer opportunity sounds so fun! We all know how valuable volunteers are to a race, and Boston is the grand daddy of them all. And don’t even get me started on distracted drivers…I’m in Iowa, you know. The majority of drivers here don’t even use their turn signals LOL

    • I consider myself lucky to have snagged a Boston volunteer assignment a couple of years ago. Apparently, people applying as part of a running club have a better chance vs. random individuals who apply, but I lucked out and the experience keeps me coming back!

  6. I runfess that I have actually punched a car or two…and I’ll leave it at that. Not to mention the hand gestures.

I’m pretty jealous of your Boston volunteer gig! Sounds fun!

    • Ha! I chuckled when I read your comment cause I have punched a car or two as well. And, the hand gestures…well that just goes without saying 😉

  7. Congrats on the vacation- you deserve it. You can workout in a gym any time. Wow, that sounds like a serious volunteer position. I do not trust drivers when I’m running. I try to make eye contact and make sure they see me.

  8. Vacation time is a break for the body and mind! I used to feel guilty of not working out on vacations, but I’ve learnt to let it go and just relax – unless I have a specific run already scheduled beforehand and routes planned.

  9. I’ve been lucky with drivers when out running but I feel they are more aggressive when I am on my bike. The whole concept of sharing the road seems to get lost on them.

How cool you will be volunteering and spectating at Boston! Both will be so much fun!

  10. omg Michelle I am the QUEEN of shouting at drivers and bikers in traffic. Really. It’s like I turned 50 and the filter just flew off of my mouth. So distracted! phones, music, food, whatever. WATCH THE ROAD PEOPLE!!

I usually always do “something” active on holiday; last year when I was in Boston I brought my kit and did NOT run, not even once. The weather was crap and I just wanted to focus on Ron and his needs before the big day. The day after we did do a bike tour that was NOT easy and was 25km so I guess I made up for it all?

Great that you got a volunteer assignment that you wanted! I’ll be volunteering in Liverpool as well – and hopefully something similar! I want to be available to watch the race and see my friends coming in at the finish (and be able to drink that beer with them…).

(my blog is finally updated and moved – I’m over at runlaugheatpie.com now!)

    • LOL! I know what you mean about the filter being gone. It’s just crazy to me what people do behind the wheel of a car!

BTW – the new blog looks great!

  11. I runfess I’m fresh off the plane home from our week in Atlanta and I’d planned to run just one time. Did I do it? No. No I did not. I so hear you on the drivers. More than sick of it. That’s a fun volunteer gig! So exciting!

  12. I am so with you on distracted drivers!! I can’t get over the craziness and what really frightens me is that I can see them when running, but can’t when I am cycling… I love that you are doing what you want to for volunteering at Boston!!

  13. I do like to run on holiday, mainly because I’m normally by the sea and I do love love love running by the sea! I almost wore shorts on Sat, it was so warm (sorreeee!) but it’s got cooler again now.

  14. I bet your body enjoyed the break! I know I give myself a break a few times a year!
I am SO with you on the distracted drivers! I am not ashamed to use my horn when needed!
That is SO fun about volunteering at Boston! I know I will never run it, but I would love to be there to help and spectate!
