Weekly Wrap – In search of my mojo

Happy Sunday!

This week I am excited to be filling in for Holly as a guest co-host for the Weekly Wrap! If you’re new to the Weekly Wrap, it is a fun linkup hosted by Holly and Wendy for fitness bloggers to share their weekly or race recaps. I hope you’ll link up with us and please be sure to comment on other posts. We’re here to support each other!

So, the title for this post pretty much sums up my week – call it the mid-winter blues, but I definitely struggled to find my motivation!

Monday – Rest day. Knowing that I would probably be enjoying an extra beverage or two during the Super Bowl I planned to make Monday a rest day. And with the Patriots win, let’s just say there was some extra celebrating!

Tuesday – When the thermometer reads 60 degrees in February, how can you turn down a chance to run?! I squeezed in a quick 3 miles at lunchtime.

Wednesday – You ever have one of those days where you weren’t even kinda sorta feeling like working out? Yeah, that was this day but did manage to get a short yoga session in.

Thursday – The motivation was way low, the weather was crappy, and I was feeling just a little “off” – not a good combo! I kept putting my run off until later in the day but finally had to admit that this run just wasn’t going to happen.

Friday – Fridays are usually my rest day – and while I had visions of overcoming this lack of motivation I was struggling with, I woke up with a migraine and decided rest was best.

Saturday – I was feeling a 100% better and even though the winds were ridiculous I was determined to get my run done!

Sunday – I had neglected my strength training and prehab exercises all week, so today was the day to get back on track!

Trusting the Training

Recently, Coach Marc had suggested that I put a pin in the idea of running the Old Fashioned 10 Miler this month. Back in December, I had put the race out there as a target to help keep me focused on building miles during the winter. But I put it out there as a target before really having a handle on the training plan Marc’s building for me. He felt that having a race of this distance this early in the training was not a wise idea. At first, I balked a little, but I quickly reminded myself that the whole point of hiring a coach for this year was to train smartly and avoid injury. So I’m trusting the process and conceded on the race – thankfully I hadn’t registered yet!

While I know it’s the right choice, I think not having that race hanging over my head took a little wind out of my sails this week – and the temperature whiplash that went on this week certainly didn’t help! I am happy that I ended the week on a strong note and hopefully, I can get back into more of a groove for the upcoming week.

And that’s a wrap!

Tell me something about your week! Do you find it hard to stay motivated during the winter months?

  1. The weather helped with my motivation this week, although we’re back to frigid mornings now. So, I guess any super bowl win is worth celebrating, but that game was so odd for a super bowl! Thanks for co-hosting!

  2. Oh Michelle…I hope that mojo is just hiding in a dark corner and will jump back out at you 😉 Seriously, when I saw it was 60-degrees out there, I almost jumped on a plane to join you. It’s been SOOO cold here, much colder than the usual winter stuff, and our ice will not go away…..

  3. I think we’re all struggling with motivation right now! Even with a race on my calendar.

But yes, listen to your coach. You pay him for a reason!

  4. You finished strong and you’re using your coach wisely: all good!

  5. I think your mojo is hanging out with mine somewhere, making fun of us! Here’s to a better week for both of us. Thanks so much for cohosting. I hope we get to meet up again this year–hopefully when you’re here in October!

  6. My motivation waned this week too. For me it was a mix of being in the thick of training and the yo-yo of weather. I want to fast forward to late April when it’s warmer and sunnier!

  7. Thanks for co-hosting this week!

I also had a bit of an off week (just feeling super tired), and i had a bit of the blues too, so I totally relate. You still did a good job on your workouts in my opinion!

Smart to listen to your coach! There will always be other races too 🙂

  8. We had 60 degrees this week too. It gave me life! Smart move on not running the 10 miler. That’s the nice thing about having a coach – they can tell you what to do!

    • Isn’t funny how just a little nice weather can give you that boost? And, I agree – it is nice to put the thinking about training in someone else’s hands.

  9. I am finding myself in a little bit of a running slump as well. Not sure what happened but it’s a new week so let’s do this. I am sure you are a little bummed about deferring your 10M race but sounds like it’s the right choice right now. Hope you have a better week!

  10. I totally see how having that race nixed would mess with your motivation. Weather whiplash indeed! I can’t believe you guys had 60 degrees! I’m keeping fingers crossed Mom Nature cooperates enough for me to fly out in a couple of weeks.

  11. Glad your migraine didn’t linger. COngrats on the Pats’ win. I only mind them every four years. (Go Giants!)

  12. Yup, i definitely have a heart time staying motivated in the winter- it’s so cold and dark! And ssmetimes icy. I really just need to get through a few more months and sring will be here, right?

  13. We have had weather whiplash also – 50 last weekend (which is just absurd for winter here) and 0 this weekend! I usually prefer the cold, but I obviously don’t like it enough to risk frostbite.

  14. I totally feel you about losing mojo during these short cold days. Good for you listening to your coach, it can be hard but being coachable is a great trait.

I hope this week is looking up for you!

  15. So glad you ended the week stronger than you started it! I had a great week but the previous one was awful – I just didn’t feeling like working out and in the end just gave up trying. So it’s okay to have those weeks… I guess the real trick is to make sure you get back in the saddle as quickly as you can before it becomes even harder and harder to do so. Thanks for guest-hosting this week!

  16. I think what gets me in winter time is that I don’t have to get up super early and get out to beat the heat so I find excuses as to why I need to push back further and further into the day. WHen it is hot, I HAVE to get out and beat the heat so Stella and I can get our run in.

  17. The temperature whiplash is definitely making it hard to get out there for runs sometimes. But that was smart to listen to your coach and put off the race. I’ve decided to switch from the half to the 5k for Rock and Roll DC too. Hopefully it pays off for both of us and we have an injury free year 🙂

  19. Ah Michelle, sometimes we just need the rest. Sometimes the lack of mojo is our body saying it needs a break. and I TOTALLY get the wind being knocked out of your sails a bit regarding the 10 Mile race – because I had that kind of week when I found out when my surgery is and knowing that my favorite race was totally off the table this year because of it. Luckily you were able to get out Sunday. This is a process and trusting your trainer is not always easy but if you have a good coach (which from what I’ve read I really think you do) then there surely are good reasons behind his advice.

  20. I would probably feel the same as you about the race. Your coach is right, but I would probably still do it, even if it meant walking LOL.

This week was tough. I, too, was feeling the effects of some dreary, miserable weather, and then my little guy got the flu. Ugh. He’s doing much better but it does definitely change the forward momentum when you get blindsided with a big illness.

  21. Oh it’s so hard to “trust the process” but my coach likes to say “when all else fails, listen to your coach,” and sadly (or I guess it’s good!) she’s always right.
Hang in there and hope you find that mojo for next week!

  22. I can see where your coach is coming from in not wanting you to run that race, but I can imagine how hard it was to skip it once you had it on your radar.

I’m like a robot and just sort of get it done. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that I’m in a gym all day… With that being said, I have been finding it harder to get on my spin bike during my injury than I would have to get outside and run if I could.

    Thanks for cohosting the linkup!
