New Shoe Giddy

What is it about getting new running shoes?! Perhaps it’s the potential of all the miles and adventures to come.

After noting on a couple of occasions that it was time for some new running shoes, I finally made it to my local running store for a fitting. But, before I get into my shopping adventure, here’s a quick recap of the week.

Monday – Strength training, focusing on core and legs

Tuesday – 5-mile run

Wednesday – 4-mile run

Thursday – Kickboxing! It’s been months…literally 3 months since I made it to the kickboxing studio. The class totally kicked my arse and reminded me of muscles I haven’t used in a while!

Friday –  Holy DOMS Batman! Ah yes, I was feeling that kickboxing class and thankfully it was a rest day.

Saturday – 5-miles with my husband J

Sunday – Cross-training in the form of an hour of shoveling. Winter hit in full effect last night with snow followed by freezing rain. The snow was wet and heavy, and made for a serious (and frigid) workout!

New Shoes!

It’s been ages since I went through a formal fitting, but given last year’s injuries and the plan to be logging some serious miles this year (hello marathon training), it seemed like a good time to revisit what I’m running in. Clearly, as your body changes over time, so may your running shoe needs – so if you haven’t had a fitting in a while I highly recommend taking the time to get one.

After reviewing my training goals and a gait analysis with the salesperson, I hopped on the treadmill to test shoes from New Balance, Brooks, Saucony, and Asics. In the end, it came down to a choice between the Saucony Guide and Brook Adrenaline – and I went with the Adrenaline!

I used them for Saturday’s 5-miler and they felt great – just the right amount of support and cushion. I am optimistic – hopefully, more miles will prove that they’re the right choice.

And that’s a wrap!

I’m joining Wendy and Holly for the Weekly Wrap – they’re sharing recaps from last weekend’s half marathon, so be sure to stop by and show them some love.

When was the last time you had a fitting? Do you tend to buy the same shoe model again and again?

  1. I did/do same shoes, but New Balance has once again changed them. I went into JackRabbit about ten days ago when I was frantic about calf/achilles ten days out from Lebow. She suggested I get through Lebow and “come play” after, so that’s the plan for this week. Pulled out and got through the run with my last pair of Vongo 2’s. RIP wonderful shoes

  2. All the best with the new shoes! I had an official fitting coming up on 2 years ago. I runfess I still don’t have a Tokyo Marathon shoe. Avoidance at its best.

  3. I don’t have to shovel snow just continually rake leaves practically all year. Both are great exercise! I had a professional shoe fitting years ago that did not turn out well. It took me years to completely heal my Achilles. So, now i’m gun shy. I’m so exciting I get to follow along as you train for a marathon! Thanks for linking!

  4. I am wearing the Saucony guide’s right now but I am thinking of something new. Maybe I will try those Brooks shoes. Getting new shoes is fun!

  5. I’ve been alternating between Brooks Adrenalines and Mizuno Wave Inspires. I just can’t pick one! The Brooks have been serving me well.

    • It’s nice that you’ve got two models that work for you. I usually like to rotate between two shoes, but I’m going to wait to make sure these Adrenalines are keepers.

  6. I was a Guides girl till they changed with the 10 and went all narrow in the toe. I have some different Sauconys now but interestingly the Brooks were the other ones recommended for me, too. Have fun in them!

  7. New running shoes are full of promise! I have Brooks too, that I use for shorter runs. I still war my Mizunos on long runs. You had a great week – lots of running!

  8. Great week of workouts Michelle!

We’re running in the same sneakers! I’ve been using the Brooks Ravenna 9 and Brooks Adrenaline GTS 18 over the past few weeks and both have been good – I even purchased an extra pair of both to have on standby for marathon training 🙂

  9. I love getting new running shoes! I usually get the same kind. I had a fitting last year, and I still ended up with the same shoe. But I did get a different one to switch between.

  12. Awesome! I have been eyeing the new adrenaline (I love the 18s so am dragging my feet about moving ahead into the 19s).

Since I worked in a running store am pretty good about managing my own fittings. I know I need support, and I know the brands that work best for me. I’m fairly lucky that I can wear Brooks (Bedlam & Adrenaline), Saucony (Guide), Mizuno (Wave Inspire) and Adidas. I switch in and out pretty equally.

    Enjoy the new kicks!

    • It’s great that you have a couple of models you can rotate between. I’m told that the 19s are a fairly big redesign from the 18s – just a heads up if you decide to switch.

  13. I have been wearing the Adrenalines for a few years (and have alternated with Mizuno Wave Inspires on occasion). Welcome to the Brooks club 😉 Did you know, they are on sale on the website for $78 right now (the 18’s)…..I might have to snag another pair to hide in my closet 😉 You had a busy week….hope all the kick boxing DOMS weren’t too grumpy.

    • I’ve seen the 18s everywhere on sale! Unfortunately, I’ve got the 19s and I’m told that the fit is different. Always good to stock up on a shoe you really like!

  14. What a great idea! I’ve been running with Asics Gel Kayanos since I first started running in 2013. They have served me well, but I often think I should get another analysis done to assure they are right for me.

  15. great week! did you love being back at kickboxing?? I bet the DOMS was severe! but then you know you really did something! Nice extra cross training with the shoveling! It’s snowing here now as I type this… I wonder if training is still happening tonight!!!

yay for new shoes! that reminds me I need to check how many more KM’s I have on the shoes I’m running in. who knows what my needs will be after my surgery! hopefully all will be clear and sorted out before we start marathon training!

    • I did love being back at kickboxing – I need to find a way to fit it in more often. I love that it works a lot of muscles that running doesn’t, but OMG I really need to work on my upper body strength! LOL!

  16. Interesting cross training. Shoveling definitely helps 😉

Congrats on your new shoes. I love Brooks. I’ve Ghost though. Every time I end up buying one of those. Thinking of trying something different, just to broaden my horizon.
