The road back from an injury can be a long winding one, full of ups and downs and twists and turns. I find as you travel along this road your greatest companions are determination, belief and patience.
You must have the determination to do the work needed to heal and get stronger.
You must believe you that the work you put into your recovery will pay off.
Ah but patience….there’s the tough one. As the injury starts to heals….as you start to feel “better” the urge to run or to push your runs grows stronger. It’s easy to want to leave patience behind and get back into the game. But go too fast or too hard and you’ll find that road to recovery extending a lot further out in front of you than you want.
I remind myself of this every time I step on to the treadmill. My knee is definitely healing and I’m definitely feeling anxious as I eye the calendar….but I need to balance the urge to run and train with patience.
The ultimate goal this year is to Thrive not just survive….A slow and steady return will payoff in the end!
Injury is definitely a tough teacher. I’m glad your knee is feeling better and I hope you return to running in a way that keeps your knee and all body parts happy.

I agree that this is the hardest part of recovery. I think the TM can be good for it because you can control the time/distance and pace and not be tempted to go longer/faster. Keep at it and you will get there!

YES!!! I always tell myself I want to run for life, not for a race. So it’s not always easy, but we can be patient, yes?? I’m saying this for me to!

Running for life – that’s it absolutely!
Oh I’m sorry to hear about your knee! Patience is the worst…I think runners must have a predisposition to being impatient! I wish you a speedy recovery!

Patience sucks! I am having a hard time with this right now too bc I see my spring races slipping out of reach again. I haven’t even wanted to write about it all. It’s nice to know I am not alone in my feelings but I still wish we both would be better faster!

I know what you mean about not wanting to write about it. I’m sorry recovery is slow-going for you too. But we will make it back! Hang in there.
Trust me, I know how hard this is. You will come back and come back stronger than ever!! Chin up!

Thanks Sue!
I am right there with you. It is so hard to be patient sometimes! I haven’t run in 8.5 weeks and it is brutal sometimes.
You have a great attitude and hope your injury heals fast! 🙂
