February is a Wrap!

We made it! I swear these past 28 days felt l-o-n-g! As I recently runfessed, I am winter-weary and oh so ready to put this month and all of the snow and ice that came with it in the rearview mirror.

So before I declare February a wrap – I’m linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down. Here’s how the last week of the month played out.

Weekly Run Down Week 8

Monday — 3 miles, 10 min core, and 10 min stretch. Mother Nature was not playing nice so that meant more time on the mill.
Tuesday — 20 min ride plus 5 min cooldown ride, 20 min core, and 10 min stretch. I’m not even sure why but this was one of those days where everything felt hard, as evidenced by my post-workout selfie from the floor!

Wednesday — 4 miles, 10 min core, and a stretch. What a difference a day makes! Mother Nature served up 50 degrees and sunshine, and my run felt effortless!

Thursday — 3 miles, 10 min core, and 10 min stretch. Everything that started to melt the day before froze overnight, so it was back to the mill again.

Friday — 3 miles, 20 min core, 30 min ride. Matty’s core class was just 20 minutes of evil, but the soundtrack of Cody’s BHM Celebration ride was oh so good!

Saturday — 2 miles, 20 min ride plus 5 min cooldown ride, 10 min core, and 10 min stretch.

Sunday — 4 miles, 10 min core, and 10 min stretch. I took advantage of a break between rainstorms to get outside for some miles this morning. I love how peaceful Sunday mornings can be.

This week was heavy on short runs, and light on strength training – not really planned, just went with how I was feeling.

Despite keeping my runs short throughout the month, I manage to hit my goal of 50 miles. And, with today’s workout, the enCore 28 daily core challenge is now complete. I’m still undecided on my goals for March so I’ll share them later.

How was your February?

Light at the End of the Ice Tunnel

While there was more snow and ice to contend with this week, a quick peek at the forecast ahead has me downright giddy!

I Spy 40’s!!

Ah yes…light at the end of the ice tunnel! OK, so before I get ahead of myself, here’s a quick recap of this week’s workouts.

Weekly Run Down Week 7

Monday — 2-miles, 10 min core, 15 min strength, and 10 min stretch. I had the day off for Presidents Day so it was nice to have the chance to sleep in a little. The weather was a mess of icy rain so it was another short treadmill run. I really enjoyed Jess’ Flash 15 workout – she knows how to make the most of a 15 min strength session!

Tuesday — 20 min ride, 20 min core, and 10 min stretch.
Wednesday — 10 min core, but otherwise a rest day. I woke up feeling really off and struggled to get moving so I took a pass on my run. A visit to my massage therapist after work was the perfect remedy.
Thursday — 3.5 miles, 10 min core, and stretch. Another gray day but 27 degrees felt balmy! Following Wednesday’s massage, my legs felt fresh and I really enjoyed the playlist from Matty’s BHM Motown run!

Friday — 2.5 miles, 15 min core, 20 min ride and there was shoveling…again. The snowstorm that was supposed to hit Thursday made an all-day appearance on Friday. I wasn’t motivated to be on the treadmill for long so I hopped on for the last of the Year of Yes runs for just a couple of miles. I wanted more cardio so I took the BHM Broadway Ride – this was my second ride with Ally, and again I found her to be too theatrical for my taste…for me, it detracted from the ride. On the plus side, I loved the soundtrack! This was also one of my favorite core classes of the enCore28 Challenge – I bookmarked it and definitely plan to take it again.

Saturday — 4 miles, 10 min core, and 15 min upper body strength. With the roads and sidewalks still a mess, it was another date with my treadmill. The back-to-back Peloton runs helped to keep the mill miles tolerable.

Sunday — As I draft this post I’m still undecided. After 3 straight days of running, I had planned to ride today, but the sun is out and the lure of another run is strong. The compromise may be a walk for some outdoor time. Day 21 of the enCore Challenge is also on tap, along with an extended stretch session or yoga.

Is the weather forecast improving where you are?

Taking the weather in stride

Another week of frigid temps, snow, and ice…it is February after all. While I was indoors far more than I would have liked, I am very grateful to have both a treadmill and Peloton bike at the ready. Here’s a quick look at my week in workouts…

View from my Sunday run

Monday — Peloton 20 min Ride, Arms & Shoulders, Core, and Stretch.

Tuesday — 20 min Core, Strength for Runners, Stretch…and there was shoveling. The Miley Cirus soundtrack made this core class extra challenging – if it weren’t for the fact that it was part of the enCore28 Challenge I would have taken a pass.
Wednesday — 10-min core class, otherwise a rest day.
Thursday — 3 miles on the mill and 10-min core.
Friday — 3 miles on the mill, 20-min core, and full-body stretch. To break up the monotony of another mill run, I split the run in two with the core session in between.

Saturday — Peloton 30-min Ride, 10-min core, and 10-min stretch. Added bonus of some extra time on the bike catching up with some blogger friends via Zoom.

Catching up with Coco, Deb, Kim, Renee, and Kim!

Sunday — 3 miles earlier, plus 10-min core class, and I’m still planning some time on my yoga mat post-coffee. I was happy to log some outdoor miles! Even though it was cold and gray, it was peaceful.

We were clearly spoiled by a mild January, but I’m doing my best to not complain and just take it all in stride. Based on the forecast for the week ahead it looks like I’ll need to continue to embrace the indoor workouts. On the plus side, I have Monday off for Presidents’ Day and a much, much-needed massage scheduled for Wednesday!

How’s the weather where you are? Are you still getting outdoors or taking your workouts inside?

Week 5 – Snow and Ice

Mother Nature gave us a run for our money this past week with a heavy dose of winter weather, so this week was all about working around the snow and ice. Here’s a quick peek at my week.

Monday — 3-mile run, day 1 of the enCore28 challenge (10 min core) and 10 min stretch class.
Tuesday — 20-min Peloton ride, 20-min core, and 10-min stretch. And, there was shoveling.
Wednesday — Day 3 of the core challenge with a 10-min core class, otherwise a rest day.
Thursday — 20-min Peloton ride, 10-min core, 10-min strength, and 10-min stretch. I had a run planned, but thanks to frigid temps the streets were just too icy. This stack of classes was a great alternative and my favorite workout of the week!

Friday — 3 miles on the mill and 15-min core. An episode of The Home Edit helped to pass the time. I’m so thankful we finally installed a small TV above the treadmill!
Saturday — 4 miles, 10-min core, and 10-min stretch. It was a bit warmer than it had been the past couple of days so I was determined to run outdoors. I definitely found some patches of black ice along the way but managed to stay upright. (Maybe the core work is paying off?)
Sunday Right now coffee but I plan on a 30-min ride, core, either a short stretch or yoga class later.

Another snowstorm is heading this way today and there’s more snow and freezing rain in the forecast for later this week, so it looks like I’ll be spending some quality time on the mill…or riding a lot more.

So how was your week?

Wrapping up January and Setting February Goals

It’s been a long month…but here we are on the last day and ready to step into February. Before I lay out my goals for the upcoming month, here’s a quick run down of this week’s workouts:

Monday — Peloton 20-minute ride, 20-min Bodyweight Strength, and Yoga. This may have been my favorite class combo of the week, but boy oh boy I had forgotten how challenging Pigeon Pose is for my very tight right hip!

Tuesday — 3-mile run and Yoga.
Wednesday — Peloton 20-minute ride, 10-min Core for Runners, and Yoga. Took another of the Year of Yes rides and snagged a new PR!

The satisfaction of a new PR!

Thursday — Yoga and a rest day.
Friday — 3-mile run plus Yoga. It was -8 with the windchill so I was more than content to hop on the mill for this one.
Saturday — Peloton 30-min Britney Spears Ride, 20-min Britney Spears Full Body Strength plus yoga. Such a fun combination, but I was really feeling it after the 100 squats!
Sunday — As I sit and write this over coffee, yoga is done and the plan is to run 3 – 4 miles. Right now it is a balmy 7 degrees with a feels like of -2 so I’m waiting on the warm-up. As much as I actually don’t mind winter running, single-digit temps and my Raynaud’s Syndrome don’t play well together!

February Goals

I had 4 goals for January:

— Daily yoga
— Peloton Winter Launch Challenge (1 class/day)
— 62.5 miles
— Return to mindful eating and leave the deserts alone

I hit all but the mileage goal – to be honest, I let go of the mileage goal pretty early on as I prioritized getting my hip to a happy place. And, now that I’m running pain-free I would say that was a wise call. There’s still plenty of time left in the year to hit my ZOOMA Run Club goal of 750 run/walk miles.

So here’s what I’m targeting for February:

— Daily stretching or yoga
— Matty’s enCORE28 Challenge on Peloton (daily core classes)
— 50 miles
— Pre-hab/PT exercises 2x’s/week

The theme here is to keep doing the things necessary to keep my hip happy, while building some mileage.

How was your January? Any big goals for the new month?

Week 3 – Oh hello winter!

After enjoying relatively mild temps (40’s) and no trace of snow, Ma Nature reminded us this week that it is still winter in New England. On the flip side, the sun made a return appearance! I don’t know about you, but for me, bright sunshine always helps to make these cold winter days much more tolerable.

Here’s how my workout week played out…

Braving Saturday’s wind!

Monday — Peloton 20-minute ride, 20-min Bodyweight Strength, and Yoga for Hamstrings. I continue to enjoy the theme of these “Year of Yes” workouts, and this yoga class focused on hamstrings was so needed and made a repeat appearance throughout the week.

Tuesday — 3.5-mile run and yoga.
Wednesday — Rest day plus sun salutations. I woke up with a headache that left me feeling really off so I did a 10-min sun salutation sequence and called it a day.
Thursday — Peloton 20-min ride (another “Year of Yes” ride!) plus a 5-min cool-down ride, 10-min core, and a repeat of the Yoga for Hamstrings.
Friday — 3-mile run and yoga. It was oh so cold, but the sunshine was glorious!

Saturday — 4-mile run and yoga. A biting wind made this run extra frigid, but the combination of early morning sun and quiet roads made this an enjoyable run.
Sunday — Marcia’s 20-min Standing Abs and Strength workout and Peloton 20-min Yoga for Hips. If you have not checked out Marcia’s YouTube channel you really should!

It was another week of pain-free running! And, as you can see the yoga streak continues (Day 24 as of today!). On both Friday and Saturday I changed things up a bit up by starting with the 10-minute sun salutation sequence as a warm-up before heading out for my run – it seemed to work well so this may be the plan for the upcoming week.

How was your week? Do you find certain combinations of workouts work best for you?

Week 2 – Let the running begin

This week marked my first runs of 2021. After taking a week plus off from running I was itching to get a little time on the road this week. The goal was to take it slow and see what my body would give me. Here’s how my workouts played out…

Weekly Run Down Week 2

Monday — 30 mins Yoga. It was a long workday with way too much time spent hunched over my laptop. This yoga class with a focus on twists was a perfect remedy.

Tuesday — 3.25-mile run plus 10 min yoga. Finally a run for 2021 and happily it was a good one. Everything felt smooth and easy and I was tempted to run further, but I know I’m better off if I take this slowly.

Wednesday — Rest day plus 10 min yoga. I realized I had gone 2 straight weeks without a rest day, but I did 10 minutes of sun salutations to keep my yoga streak going (Day 13).

Thursday — Peloton 20 min ride, 20 min Full Body Strength, and 10 min yoga. Everything felt good about this workout – it was a great way to start the day! Added bonus, I ended the day with a sports massage.

Friday — 3-mile run plus 10 min yoga. Another solid run on a cold but beautiful morning. (See the photo at the beginning of this post).

Saturday — Peloton 20 min Full Body Strength, 10 min yoga, and a Zoom ride with some blogger buddies.

This Sun Salutations class has become one of my favorites. I’ve taken it a few times now and it will probably stay in the rotation for the foreseeable future.

It was so much fun to see and chat with Coco, Darlene, Kim, Deb, Deborah, and Renée! A big thanks to Kim for organizing and photo credit to Coco 🙂

Sunday — 3.5-mile run plus 10 min yoga. The wind made everything about this run hard…but on a positive note, my hip continues to feel fine!

So tell me something about your week.

Weekly Run Down – Week 1

First full week into 2021 and what a week it turned out to be! As I expected, returning to work after some time off was chaotic at best. But any drama there was quickly overshadowed by all that took place in DC. Needless to say, I have been keeping my word of the year Mindset front and center!

On the fitness front, the week was thankfully far less dramatic, and as always provided an opportunity to channel any stress! I made a conscious decision to not run to give my cranky right hip a break. Here’s how my workouts played out…

Monday — Peloton 30-min ride and 10 min yoga for hips. I loved this Hamilton ride and scored a new PR!
Tuesday — Peloton 30-min ride and 10-min yoga. I always know that Alex’s classes are going to be challenging, but I swear he was on fire from the opening minute. I just what I could to hold on.

Wednesday — 3-mile walk and 10-min yoga
Thursday — Peloton 30-min ride and 10-min yoga. I have to say that I really was not a fan of this Beyonce ride. The instructor Ally was just a little too into the theatrics which really detracted from the ride in my opinion. Ah well, can’t expect to enjoy all of the classes.
Friday — 5-mile walk, 20-min strength class, and yes yoga. I did the walk with a friend and the combination of being outdoors and catching up was good for my soul. I really liked the yoga for hips class I did earlier in the week so I repeated it.
Saturday — 3-mile walk and 10-min yoga
Sunday — Peloton 20-min ride and 20-min yoga. This combination of classes was my absolute favorite of the week! I have really been enjoying the “Year of Yes” rides and the positive messaging. And Denis’s yoga classes are always good. I bookmarked both of these classes and will be taking them again.

I think the combination of a run break and daily yoga was the right call as I have been feeling good and I’m itching to get out for a run this week! And, while I was initially wondering how I was going to make this month’s goal of daily yoga a reality, I think I found a nice balance aiming for 10 minutes a day with a longer session on Sunday.

Enjoying a week off & setting January goals

Today marks the last day of a glorious week off! It was super low-key, providing the mental break I seriously needed. I’m now feeling refreshed and ready to take on some new goals for the month. But first, here’s how the past week’s workouts played out.

Monday — 4 miles. My right hip was feeling pretty wonky after just 2 miles so I was pleased to eke out 4.
Tuesday —  Rest to give my unhappy hip a break.
Wednesday — Peloton 25-minute ride, 15-min Bodyweight Strength & 10-min stretch
Thursday — 3 miles. And with this run, I wrapped up 2020 with 646.4 miles. I also had a deep tissue massage which did wonders for my hip.

Friday — 2.3-mile walk and 20 min slow flow yoga
Saturday — Zoom ride with blogger friends followed by 30-min full-body strength & 10 min yoga for glutes. Thanks to Kim for organizing the ride!

Top Row: Coco, Renee & Kim Bottom Row: Marcia, me, & Kim

Sunday ––  I chose to sleep in this morning and as I sit here lingering over coffee I still haven’t decided what I will do today. The only thing I’m certain of is that there will be movement and yoga…as you’ll see in my goals below.

January 2021 Goals

Given all that took place in 2020 and all of the uncertainty that remains, I am reluctant to set any big running/fitness goals for 2021. Thanks to the ZOOMA Run Club, I have set a run/walk mileage goal of 750 miles – that’s 62.5 miles/month which feels doable, especially without any big races to train for.  I have always liked to set monthly goals to help keep me accountable and provide a focus, and that’s how I plan to continue to roll in 2021.

So here’s the plan for January:

— Daily yoga
— Peloton Winter Launch Challenge (1 class/day)
— 62.5 miles
— Return to mindful eating and leave the deserts alone

In the closing weeks of December, I really let all forms of recovery slide so the return of a cranky hip on Monday’s run was not a complete surprise. I’ve often toyed with the idea of daily yoga and now feels like a perfect time to give it a go. Some sessions will be longer than others, but I look forward to seeing how I feel with some focused effort on my mat.

Any suggestions for online yoga classes? Have you set any goals for 2021?

Christmas Week Run Down

Happy Sunday!

That sound you hear is me exhaling and settling into a staycation week off! This past week was a mad sprint to wrap-up projects and put out work fires (there seem to be far too many of those lately) and to put in the final touches to get ready for Christmas.

Workout wise there were a lot of Peloton holiday-themed classes, another virtual race, and a Christmas run “with” friends. Here’s the run down….

(from the drive-through light show we visited this week)

Christmas Week Run Down

Monday — Monday was oh so…Monday and my workout never happened.

Tuesday — Peloton 20-minute ride & full-body strength.

Wednesday — Peloton Holiday Slow Flow Yoga.

Thursday — Peloton 30-minute ride and core.

Friday — A Christmas run with friends! Earlier in the week, Kim (KookyRunner) invited Kim (Running on the Fly) and me to join her for a virtual run on Christmas morning. While the weather was oh so stormy, making this a treadmill run – I was still happy to be running “with” friends!

Thanks to Kim for the collage

Saturday — BAA virtual 10K. 2nd race in the #FinishStrongChallenge. The morning was bright and windy, and the miles were easy.

Sunday –– Peloton 25-minute ride and core.

Christmas was a low-keyed affair, given the times, but it was still a good day with much to be grateful for. And, now we’ve entered into one of my favorites weeks for the year. I have always enjoyed the week between Christmas and the new year – a great time to relax, reflect and recharge.

How was your week? Did you have a nice Christmas?
