Week 6 – Monday Motivation

Source: Run the Edge

OK so the step back week is done and now it’s time to pick up the pace a bit – I’ve got 4 weeks until the Wampanoag 10-miler and R’n’R DC is still 8 weeks out.

On the plan for this week:
Monday: Continue to bask in the glow of the Patriots win! Plus an easy run (3) & core work
Tuesday: Speedwork – 1600 repeats (ack!)
Wednesday: Easy run (3) plus weekly Pilates class
Thursday: Whatever run (4) — meaning whatever pace my legs will go! & core work
Friday: Yoga
Saturday: Long run (12)
Sunday: Core work or total rest

I’m going to see how things go this week  – if I continue to find that I’m dog-tired on Thursday to the point that I’m still feeling it when I head out Saturday, then I may consider cutting out the Wednesday runs and adding a couple more miles in on Mondays.

What’s your week look like?

Monday Motivation

Running is a big question mark that’s there each and every day. It asks
“Are you going to be a wimp or are you going to be strong today?”
— Peter Maher
Thanks to this weekend’s Nor’easter, my race on Sunday didn’t happen. It’s been postponed until this coming Sunday. Since I woke up yesterday to a bad cough and no power & no heat, I was just as happy to hold off. The good news is the early forecast shows next Sunday be a clear day in the 50’s!
It looks to be another crazy week ahead but with a little creative calendar juggling I think I can get all my workouts in — including the 11-miler I’m off to do now!
Have a great Monday & Happy Halloween!

Monday Motivation – Week 5

“Choice, not chance, determines your destiny.”
— Aristotle
Week 4 was the first solid week of training for me and it was capped off with a fantastic 10 miler yesterday morning. I finished each workout feeling strong…instead of the “What the heck was that?!?” feeling of weeks 1 & 2.

So, it’s on the week 5 and I choose to …..

….hit all my target paces for each workout
….re-introduce my ITB to the foam roller
….do daily core work
….pay better attention to what I’m eating
….get more sleep so I’m not dragging my tail outta bed in the morning
….in addition to my runs, commit to doing yoga and strength training
So what choices will you make today?

Monday Motivation – Week 2

“Every day is a new beginning. Treat it that way.
Stay away from what might have been, and look at what can be.”
— Marsha Petrie Sue
Week 2 Plan:
Monday – Rest Day — (Much needed since I took advantage of the rainy day yesterday to push my pace a bit)
Tuesday – Track work (4)
Wednesday – Easy run (2) & Strength work
Thursday – Yoga
Friday – Long (8)
Saturday – weekly Pilates reformer session
Sunday – Easy (3 or 4)
My schedule this week could get a little nutty as my boys’ schools continue to jam everything into the final few days of school – Seriously, why do teachers do that? So I may have to play with the days a little to get it all in.
When it becomes a battle of your schedule vs. your training – if you have to give up a workout in your plan, which one do you forfeit?

Monday Motivation – Rain edition

“Only those who risk going too far can possibly find out how they can go.”
— T. S. Elliot
A crazy rain system settled over our area yesterday and according to the local weather man, it’s going to camp out all week. So I’m trying to psyche myself up for a lot of running in the rain this week. Yes, I could go to the gym and hit the ‘mill, but as my Hyannis snow race taught me, I need to be prepared for any kind of weather come race day.
I hit 24 miles last week – my biggest training week to date – and I’m happy to say my legs feel pretty good.
On the plan this week:
Monday — Yoga
Tuesday — Tempo run (6)
Wednesday — Easy run (4) and strength training
Thursday — Rest
Friday — LSD (10)
Saturday — weekly Pilates reformer session
Sunday — Easy run (3 or 4)
What do you planned for this week? Make it a good one!

Patience with pace

“He who would learn to fly one day
must first learn to stand and walk and run
and climb and dance; one cannot fly into flying.”
– Nietzsche
I first posted this quote almost a year ago. At the time I was a few weeks into the C25K program and it was a great reminder to be patient with myself, that longer distances and greater speed would come in time.
Well, I was getting a little frustrated with myself last week…yes the distances have definitely increased but my pace is at times erratic and, truthfully, slower than I would like it to be. So it seemed like a good time for this quote again. It also feels like the perfect time for a step back week – and lo and behold that’s what the training plan calls for!
So it’s some easy runs, yoga, and strength training this week. I think I may even leave the Garmin at home and run without worrying about pace.
How do you keep from obsessing about your pace?

Commitment

There’s a difference between interest and commitment.
When you’re interested in something, you do it only when it’s convenient.
When you’re committed to something, you except no excuses, only results.
— Kenneth Blanchard
Just a little something to think about on a Monday morning….

On the plan for this week:
Today:  Yoga
Tuesday:  Tempo Run (5)
Wednesday:  Easy Run (3) and Strength Training
Thursday:  Rest
Friday:  Long Run (8)
Saturday:  Pilates and Strength Training

Have a Great Week!

4 Weeks to Go!!

If you think you can do it, or
if you think you can’t do it
you are right
                                     — Henry Ford
In just 4 short weeks I’ll be lining up to run the Tufts 10k for Women. This is a race I have thought about running for quiet some time, but never thought I’d get to a point where I could actually run 6.2 miles. Even when I signed up back in July, the thought of covering that much distance was daunting!
But it’s amazing what a shift in your beliefs can produce — I have now completed my 6 mile loop multiple times and yesterday ran my second 7-mile run! With still 4 weeks left, I now know I can complete the distance! I also know it will be easy to get nervous and psyche myself out multiple times between now and October 11th, so I’ve printed out this quote and taped it to my mirror to remind myself it’s all mental now!
Happy Running!
